DTN Closing Livestock Comment 01/03 15:31 Lean Hog Futures Land Moderate Progress at Midweek Hog contracts closed moderately higher, supported by short-covering and technical buying. The cattle complex settled narrowly mixed as traders slowly jockeyed ahead of late-week cash news. By John Harrington DTN Livestock Analyst GENERAL COMMENTS The cash cattle market remained stone quiet through Wednesday with no real bids noted and just a few preliminary suggestions of asking prices (e.g., $126 to $127 in the South). According to the closing report, the national hog base is $1.65 higher ($54.50-62.50), weighted average $60.54). The corn trade was so slow Wednesday that we wanted to periodically check for a pulse. The stock market closed higher with the Dow up 88 points and the Nasdaq better by 58.
